Greetings,

Your resume has been forwarded for consideration for the position of General Vessel Assistant.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) roots date back to 1807, when the Nation’s first scientific agency, the Survey of the Coast, was established.  Since then, NOAA has evolved to meet the needs of a changing country.  NOAA maintains a presence in every state and has emerged as an international leader on scientific and environmental matters.

NOAA's mission is to understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our Nation’s economic, social and environmental needs.  NOAA is an agency that enriches life through science.  Our reach goes from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor as we work to keep citizens informed of the changing environment around them.  From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce, NOAA's products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America’s gross domestic product.  NOAA's  dedicated scientists use cutting-edge research and high-tech instrumentation to provide citizens, planners, emergency managers and other decision makers with reliable information they need when they need it.
NOAA operates a wide assortment of Hydrographic Survey, Oceanographic Research, and Fisheries Research vessels.  These vessels are operated by NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations.  Ships located in the Pacific are managed by the Marine Operations Center, Pacific (MOP) in Newport, OR.  Ships located in the Atlantic are managed by the Marine Operations Center, Atlantic (MOA) in Norfolk, VA.  Logistic support for the vessels are provided by the appropriate marine operations center or, for vessels in Woods Hole, MA, Charleston, SC, Pascagoula, MS, San Diego, CA, Davisville, RI and Honolulu, HI by Port Captains located in those ports. NOAA also has homeports located in Ketchikan, AK; Kodiak, AK.
The ships are run by a combination of  NOAA Commissioned Officers and Wage Marine civilians.  The Wage Marine personnel include licensed masters, mate, and engineers, and unlicensed members of the engine, steward, and deck departments.  In addition, survey and electronic technicians operate and/or maintain the ship’s mission, communication and navigation equipment.  The ship’s officers and crew provide mission support and assistance to embarked scientist from various NOAA laboratories as well as the academic community.
Today, NOAA is the largest operator of Federal research vessels.  NOAA offers a diversified fleet, which involves a variety of missions and offer job security, good pay, and the benefits of being a civil service employee.

Room and board is provided aboard the ship for all employees and depending upon your position and the berthing situation on board, you may/may not share a room with another crew member.
All employees will be hired in a permanent status, under the mixed tour agreement.
Selected individuals may be hired within the Marine Operations Center Relief Pool. This type of work is a combination of periods of full-time, part-time, and intermittent work schedule which allows the best utilization of the employee based on the work requirements of the organization.  Mariners hired in the Relief Pool will need to be available for a minimum of 120 days (not all 120 days will be for sea time) between April 1 and November 30 each calendar year and will need to be able to commit to at least one 30 day (sea time) assignment for each calendar year.  Opportunity to work more than 120 days may become available during our sailing season.
Selected individuals that are hired aboard one vessel, will be expected to work year around (excluding training/leave/etc.)

If interested in possible employment, please inform me what department you wish to be considered:  Deck, Engine or Steward Department
