Opportunities for Women in the Construction Trades

Construction Apprenticeship
3-5 year "Earn While You Learn" programs jointly sponsored by Employers and Construction Craft Unions
Union trades offer good wages as well as pension and health care benefits even as starting apprentices.
Major Construction trades include Carpenters, Electricians, Operating Engineers, Plumbers and Pipefitters, Sheet Metal Workers as well as general Laborers. There are over 26 kinds of construction apprenticeships.

General requirements for entry into apprenticeship (each trade may vary):
  • 18 or older,
  • GED or High school equivalent
  • Physically fit and able to do the work of the trade
  •     (varies by trade but includes lifting 50-100 #'s, climbing, agility, eye-hand coordination)
  • Driver's license or ability to obtain one at the time of dispatch to a job and a clean driving record.
  • Drug free - drug testing both pre-employment and random is standard.
  • Reliable transportation
  • Good math skills, spatial relations and English literacy

Starting salaries vary by program but range from $18 to $25 an hour with regular raises throughout the apprenticeship topping out at $30-$50 an hour.
Construction work is hourly, seasonal and physically demanding. Work for apprentices is once again on the upswing with the improvement in the economy.

Women veterans who are pursuing a career in the construction trades and are interested in a scholarship to the conference, please refer them to us at womenintrades@gmail.com

We will not be able to pay hotel and other expenses, however their registration includes breakfast and lunch on both Saturday and Sunday. We need to make arrangements with them by March 28. Please ask the interested women to include their names, their phone number, an email address, and a few sentences on why they are interested in attending the conference.

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Women
Building California and the Nation conference.
For nine years, this was a California
conference. When the National Building
and Construction Trades Department
(BCTD) joined as a co-sponsor in 2011,
this became the largest conference for
women in the trades in history.
The conference
is designed to
bring more
women into the
trades and to
offer
tradeswomen
(both new and
experienced)
opportunities for
networking, skill
building, leadership
development and organizing.
Our goal for the 2013 conference is to
recognize and celebrate the women who
are leaders — on the job, in their unions,
and in their communities, and to help build
the leadership skills of others.
Each year, tradeswomen, union leaders,
apprenticeship coordinators, contractors,
and politicians facilitate more than 30
workshops and plenary sessions.
Workshop tracks include: Pre-apprentices;
Staying in & staying strong; Promoting
leadership; Policy and politics; Career ladders,
and Nourishing extras.
The conference will
have two key bookends:
a “Meet and
Greet” event for
women who are leaders
in their unions
held on Friday
evening; and a
Policy Forum on
Sunday, sponsored
by the
National Task Force on
Tradeswomen’s Issues.
Jointly planned by the California
Building Trades Council, Tradeswomen
Inc., and the BCTD’s Committee for
Women in the Trades, the conference
promises to be more exciting and productive
than ever.
Join women in the trades from across
the country in Sacramento for another historic
gathering.
