Subject: Ten Reasons Why You Didn't Get the Job

This week's announcement comes from Lee Cohen, an Executive Senior Partner
with Lucas Group. Wondering what's running through your interviewer's mind?
Here are 10 things your interviewer might be thinking:
1. You showed up too early. Interviewers are annoyed when candidates show up
more than five or 10 minutes early.
2. We're judging how you're dressed. A professional appearance still
matters. You don't need to wear expensive clothes, but showing up in a
casual outfit or clothes that don't fit properly, having unkempt hair, or
inappropriately flashy makeup can be harmful.
3. We don't want you to try to sell us. It's a turn-off when a candidate
seems overly focused on closing the deal, rather than on figuring out if the
job is the right fit. No hiring manager wants to think she's being
aggressively sold; we want the best person for the job.
4. Little things count. It's not just official contacts, like interviews and
formal writing samples. Hiring managers are watching everything, including
how quickly you respond to requests for writing samples and references,
whether your email confirming the time of the interview is sloppily written,
and how you treat the receptionist.
5. We might act like we don't mind you bad mouthing a former employer, but
we do. We'll let you talk once you start, but internally we're noting that
you're willing to trash-talk people who have employed you in the past and
are wondering if you'll do that to us.
6. You might be talking too much. Your answers to your interviewer's
questions should be direct and to-the-point. Rambling and unnecessary
tangents raise doubts about your ability to organize your thoughts and
convey needed information quickly. If you're tempted to go on longer than
two minutes, instead ask, "Does that give you what you're looking for, or
would you like me to go more in depth about this?"
7. Fit really matters, so we think a lot about your personality. You might
have all the qualifications an employer is looking for, but still not get
hired because your working style would clash with the people with whom you'd
be working. Remember, it's not just a question of whether you have the
skills to do the job; it's also a question of fit for this particular
position, with this particular boss, in this particular culture, and in this
particular company.
8. We want you to talk about salary first for the exact reason you fear.
Salary conversations are nerve-wracking for job seekers because they know
that they risk low-balling themselves by naming a number first. And that's
exactly why interviewers push candidates to throw out a number first.
9. We're going to ask other people what they think of you. This includes
everyone who came in contact with - from the receptionist to the guy who you
met for two minutes in the hallway.
10. We like thank-you notes, but not for the reason you think.
Post-interview thank-you notes aren't just about thanking the interviewer
for her time; the ones that are done well build on the conversation and
reiterate your enthusiasm for the job.

7 Tips to Financially Plan for a Career Transition Setting and achieving
concrete, short-term financial goals is easy. It can be relatively painless
to consistently sock away a few dollars here and there in pursuit of a big
screen television, a weekend getaway, or a pair of shoes that whisper your
name every time you walk by them at the mall.
With those kinds of near term goals, you can see it, imagine experiencing
it, and dream about wearing it while you faithfully scrimp and save for
whatever indulgence appeals most to you.
Financially planning for a career transition, however, isn't nearly as
exciting. Maybe it's because there is often so much uncertainty and stress
in the mix. Who will be your next employer? Will you be earning as much or
more than you do now? Will you be able to afford the neighborhood of your
dreams? How much will you have left over after paying your rent, mortgage,
or child's college tuition bill?
Inquiring minds want to know the answers to those questions and so many
more.
Lessen the angst that often accompanies a military-to-civilian career
transition or any major job change by incorporating the following strategies
into your planning process.
1. Consider the possibilities. If you know a job change is imminent, play
the "what if ." game. Identify all the potential outcomes to various
scenarios. By thinking through and planning for each possible contingency,
you lessen the transition stress bit by bit.

2. Stash your cash. You might not anticipate every associated expense that
will be coming your way, but you can be certain expenses will come. Be as
prepared as you possibly can by saving routinely. Putting an allotment from
your current paycheck on autopilot isn't difficult and it's true what they
say: You won't even notice it missing if you're not seeing it in the first
place.
3. Consider the fate of your benefits. What happens to your Thrift Savings
Plan or 401(k) when you leave your job? Do you have continued health care
coverage for the time in-between employers, when the need for medical care
always seems to occur? What about your life insurance policy? Does it end on
your last day of work?
Figure out the right questions to ask, and then figure out the correct
answers. Your benefits are just as important as cold, hard currency so
include them in your transition planning and in your future negotiations for
a new position.

4. Surround yourself with expertise. You don't have to be a subject-matter
expert in money management. You will be a savvy soul, however, if you
identify those who are and take advantage of their services. Look no further

5. Run the numbers. If you don't already have a feel for what goes in and
what goes out, get a grip on your cash flow. If committing to a budget seems
like extreme accounting to you, then at least commit to tracking your income
and expenses for one month. Develop a realistic snapshot so you can
distinguish the necessities from the extras when and if the time comes to

6. Project the numbers. Search long and hard enough and you eventually will
find that new job. Know the right questions to ask before actually accepting
a job offer, however.
*    What kind of salary do you want to make? Need to make?
*    What benefits are important to you and to your family?
*    Will you be able to negotiate some of the benefits in the process?
*    If you have to relocate for the job, who pays and what is covered?
*    What happens if the job goes away? Is there a severance package in
the deal?
7. Look beyond the numbers. Scoring a higher salary in your next job is
always a plus on one level. Make sure, however, it is a plus on other levels
as well. Think long and hard about what you want in your next job and why
you want it. Make sure this big move will be worth it on a quality-of-life
level for you and your family.
