RailRoad Track Laborer Positions

Track Laborer- Driver Eligible
Work Location:   Tucson, AZ
                         Casa Grande, AZ
                         Carizozo, NM

Salary: $20.54 per hour
Basic Purpose of Job:
Repair and rebuild railroad track. Physical duties will require frequent walking over extended areas with uneven footing; flexibility sufficient for track maintenance tasks such as flexing to pick up tie plates; balance sufficient to walk on ballast; standing for more than half of each work day with periodic breaks; lift/carry and push/pull equipment and other objects weighing 25 lbs. (frequently), 50 lbs. (occasionally), and 75 lbs. (infrequently); occasional climbing on ladders; bending, stooping, and kneeling; good eye-hand coordination; and bilateral dexterity.
Required Certifications:
For this position, you will be required to become a Union Pacific certified driver during your probationary period. To become certified, you must meet the following Motor Vehicle and Medical Requirements.
  • Motor Vehicle Requirements:
1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
2. Have valid driver's license
3. Have an acceptable driving record per your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). This includes commercial and personal vehicles. No more than one moving violation conviction in the past three years. No DUI/DWI/Refusal convictions in the past three years. No more than one DOT reportable accident in past three years.
4. You may also be required to obtain your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if you will be operating a vehicle(s) with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or greater. If this is required, you will need to obtain your CDL during your probationary period.
  • Medical Requirements: Must meet the medical requirements (also called physical qualifications) for commercial motor vehicle drivers as specified by the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). For more information about FMCSA physical qualifications for drivers click here. Health and Medical Services at Union Pacific Railroad will make the final determination on whether or not an individual meets the FMCSA medical qualifications, and may add additional medical requirements to assure the person can safety perform job tasks, with or without accommodation.
Accountabilities:
  • Remove and install ties with tie tongs
·  Lift rails using the manual track jack.
·  Sweep, pick, and dig dust and snow from movable track parts
·  Remove and replace ballast.
·  Unload or assist in unloading ballast from rail car, cart or truck
·  Adze ties.
·  Clip and unclip elastic fasteners.
·  Climb ladders.
·  Dig holes and trenches.
·  Observe condition of tracks, track beds, and track right of way for problems or defects.
·  Perform track maintenance, repair, and installation.
·  Handle and move track materials and equipment.
·  Maintain track beds.
·  Work with equipment.
·  Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures.
·  Drive company vehicles as required.
·  Cut vegetation and brush when needed.
·  Drive spikes into ties with a spike maul.
·  Pull spikes with a claw bar.
·  Install and remove rail anchors.
·  Handle, place, and align tie plates under rails.
·  Cut in rails.
·  Plug spike holes.
·  Perform any other work not mentioned above that is required to construct or rehabilitate railroad tracks.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
·  Ability to perform heavy physical labor.
·  Must be capable of performing physically strenuous work on a continuous basis
·  Must be able to read and comprehend regulations and instructions as well as possess good verbal communication skills.
·  Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations
·  Ability to speak English in a clear, concise manner in order to communicate with coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
·  Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
·  Must be 21 years of age or older

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • Welding experience
·  Experience operating construction or farm equipment.
·  1 year(s) Railroad Maintenance of Way work experience
·  Current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have had a CDL in the past

Background:

Medical:
  • Employment with Union Pacific is contingent upon the successful completion of a medical examination for newly hired or transferred employees. ·  Union membership initiation fee and monthly dues or assessments are required as per the collective bargaining agreement.
·  There is a probationary period which is governed by the collective bargaining agreement based on territory
·  These positions are governed by a collective bargaining agreement. Membership to the respective labor union is required

Work Conditions:
  • Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires.
Outside work is required regardless of weather conditions.
Work takes place in many rural remote geographic areas.
On the road or traveling, as required.
Work may be seasonal based on weather, business conditions, or seniority.
Union Pacific operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will be required to work all 3 shifts, if needed. You are subject to overtime, and weekend, holiday, and/or night work.

·  Walking extensively on uneven surfaces
·  Continuous bending, stooping and kneeling are required for this position
·  The pay rate for this position is set by the union agreement and cannot be individually negotiated.
·  Must have zero work related safety violations in the past two years
·  Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Must practice safe work habits to prevent on the job accidents and injuries. Must utilize all protective equipment assigned
·  Compliance with the applicable attendance policy is an essential function of this position
·  Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes
