City Council Approves Biotechnology Incubator
On
January 29, the City Council approved a proposal to lease the former
Farmers Insurance auto claims building at 2351 Faraday Ave to
Bio, Tech, and Beyond, which
will manage a start-up incubator, community laboratory and science
education center. The goals of the incubator are to create new life
sciences companies and jobs in Carlsbad; become a leader
in the citizens science movement; add to Carlsbad's core technology
base; and serve as a regional base for science education.
"Having
an incubator and community lab in Carlsbad improves the entrepreneurial
environment," said Kathy Dodson,
economic development manager for the City of Carlsbad. "Carlsbad is
home to many important life sciences companies and Bio, Tech and Beyond
will be a center for innovation in this industry."
"The incubator is about enabling citizen scientists to translate their ideas into experiments, and then to translate
their experimental results into companies," said
Kevin Lustig, founder of Bio, Tech, and Beyond.
"This will be a first in Southern California," said
Joseph Jackson,
cofounder, who organized the BioCurious community lab in Sunnyvale, CA.
"It will offer community access to lab facilities and bring world-class
members of the
life sciences community into contact with members of the public."

Using Technology to Move Traffic
|
Have
you noticed that you travel down Palomar Airport Road and El Camino
Real more quickly? As a part of the city's initiative to improve traffic
flow, we have implemented traffic signal synchronization and a new,
state-of-the-art traffic management system, which
enables the city to observe and adjust signal timing wirelessly. This
improvement makes the traffic signal network more reliable and reduces
delays, allowing drivers to travel from point A to point B more
quickly. All major signals in Carlsbad are now part
of the traffic management system..
