Location- BLM Public Lands Center- Montrose, CO  

Description of Work:
The BLM is seeking an individual for the Veteran internship with the Public Affairs Department in its Montrose office. Preference will be given to applicants with a major in communications, journalism or a related field. Experience and aptitude in exploring business applications of social media, web development and strong writing skills are required.
The selected intern will be assigned to projects overseen by the BLM Public Affairs Specialist, pertaining to timely topics important to public land management. Applicants should specify their areas of interest and how their backgrounds provide them the proper knowledge and abilities to excel in the internship.
The public affairs specialist carries out a number of programs, activities and functions including media relations, issues management and management of public relations campaigns and events. The intern would be an integral part of these activities and must be well organized and have the ability to work independently.  Responsibilities include:
  • Develop and implement creative ways to increase brand awareness and drive traffic to BLM website, Facebook and Twitter  
  • Update Twitter, Facebook and the BLM website  
  • Must be extremely organized and prioritize well to meet deadlines Strong computer skills Strong Internet research skills  
  • Maintain a positive attitude and have a customer service approach at all times
  • Develop and implement Out-Of-The-Box community outreach programs  
  • Draft press releases as necessary Excellent verbal and written communication skills  
  • Aggregate and or create article content  
  • Communicate social media news (internal and external)  
  • Monitor various social media platforms 
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Intern must possess or be working toward a four year degree or higher in public relations, journalism, communications or other related fields.
Experience: Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume and up to three writings: public relations project planning, web development, or social media samples, showing their relevant experience.

Physical Requirements:
Most work will be performed in an office environment. However, the intern may be asked to perform site visits and work outdoors on occasion. Some lifting of boxes and materials may be required up to 50 lbs.

STAY ACTIVE:  VETERANS EXPEDITIONS

Veterans Expeditions is a non-profit organization led by veterans. VetEx provides a variety of free activities where veterans can connect with each other and enjoy physically challenging outdoor activities in a team setting.
 
Veterans Expeditions will be sponsoring a snowshoe excursion to Mt. Elbert on Saturday March 16th.  A full list of events can be found at http://vetexpeditions.com/index.php/about/calendar/. Veterans Expeditions has the ability and desire to work with disabled veterans as well veterans at all fitness levels.
